CAUTION: Cold and frost can adversely affect the quality and performance of concrete.
The curing process is delayed and the final strength is lower. At temperatures below 20°C, the demoulding time must already be extended (link to news item highlighted in yellow below).
Although we strongly advise against concreting below 5°C, sometimes there is no other way.
THEREFORE: Additional measures should be taken during intense cold.
In practice, the golden rule is that additional protective measures are required if the temperature is below 5°C during concreting or in the 72 hours thereafter.
These measures are described in detail in § 9.4 of TV 285 (and standard NBN B 15-400).
We especially recommend:

- Modify the concrete composition: use a rapid hardening cement, increase the cement content, reduce the amount of water, use a hardening accelerator … In doing so, however, it must be ensured that the implementation specifications are adhered to
- Reduce transportation time (by opting for a plant close to the site) and plan the concrete pouring as well as possible, so that there is as little time as possible between the time the water and cement come into contact and the concrete pouring
- Remove snow and ice from formwork, rebar …
- Thermally protect the concrete before and after stripping: preferably use wooden formworks that absorb little water, insulate metal formworks, insulate exposed concrete surfaces.
